I am a licensed therapist who provides couples and individual counseling to adults here in Austin, Texas. My work focuses on helping people overcome chronic stress, anxiety and depression; improve their relationships; and live authentic, empowered lives.

A former trial lawyer, I frequently work with professionals in demanding careers and people dealing with the legal system through divorce and other disputes. I empathize with the challenges of those situations and provide strategies for working through the stress and anxiety that they bring.

Counseling Philosophy

I am trauma-informed and take a holistic approach to therapy that considers both the person and surrounding influences from family, work, community, and culture. I work with each client toward achieving goals in a safe, non-judgmental environment. I believe counseling should go beyond insight and lead to solutions so that change can occur. Once you understand what’s behind things, then what?

My approach honors the mind-body connection and includes not only cognitive strategies but also methods of exploring feelings and sensations from the body, which cannot be overlooked as critical messengers of our inner experience. My work with couples is rooted in the pioneering research of Drs. John and Julie Gottman and Dr. Sue Johnson. I am also trained in EMDR and Level 1 certified in iRest, two evidence-based methods for treating trauma and working with anxiety, depression, and stress.

Background

I am originally from Houston but did my undergraduate work at the University of Notre Dame and lived in Chicago and New York City before returning to Texas. I landed in Austin to attend the University of Texas School of Law. During law school, I represented patients at the Austin State Hospital, the state’s oldest psychiatric hospital, in their commitment proceedings, and the seed for a career in the mental health field was planted. After working as a trial lawyer for several years, I returned to graduate school and earned my master’s degree in counseling from St. Edward’s University in order to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Associate here in Austin. I am also a devoted yoga practitioner and have completed 200 hours of hatha yoga training.
