Introducing Embark Counseling

Welcome to Embark Counseling!

At its core, Embark is about empowerment.  Its mission is to help you clear obstacles between you and the life you want.

What kind of obstacles?  See if any of these resonate:

  • Abusive or toxic relationships that drain you
  • Knowing what you “need” to do but feeling too depressed or weighed down
  • Feeling zapped of motivation due to burnout
  • Not knowing how to communicate with your partner
  • Difficult memories or old traumas that haunt you
  • Being stuck in a job that doesn’t inspire you
  • Feeling like you don’t have enough time to make things better

Embark Counseling was many years in the making.  I am a lawyer turned therapist.  While I loved the intellectual challenges of practicing law, my interests in psychology and healing eventually took over.   Embark now serves adults and couples dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges.

Counseling Philosophy

My approach blends cognitive strategies with methods of mindfully exploring and processing emotion.   We live in a culture that prizes intellect, but we can sense that thinking oneself out of a problem doesn’t always work.  Our brains can bring us success academically and professionally, but emotions often remain difficult terrain to navigate.  It’s the anxiety, depression, and/or sadness that we don’t always know what to do with.

This is when therapy can help.  You set the goals, and therapy is designed to help empower you to achieve them.  The process is about getting unstuck.  Moving forward.  Building on your strengths to get where you want to go.

I work with adults individually and with couples.   I rely on evidence-based strategies including EMDR and iRest—two methods for working with trauma, anxiety and depression.   I have specialized training in Dr. Sue Johnson’s emotionally focused couples therapy (EFT) for marriage and couples counseling.

Think we may be a good fit?  Here are some of the areas I specialize in:

Support for Lawyers and Other Professionals

The statistics are clear—law is one of the most stressful and demanding professions.  The rates of anxiety, depression, burnout and substance use are among the highest in the professional world.  And, sadly, the stigma surrounding these issues still makes it difficult to ask for help.

My understanding of these issues is not just academic.  I have logged years of high-stress jobs as a lawyer and know the world of intense professional challenges from the inside.  I know the culture, the stressors, and the ways people tend to cope.

If you find work stress challenging, or even anxiety-provoking at times, you are not alone.  We live in a culture where no one wants to look “weak” by discussing these topics, leaving many people feeling isolated in their struggles.   The sense of isolation is terribly misleading, as the statistics prove that the problems are actually widespread.

Many of my clients seek therapy for work-related issues, and the impact those issues have on other areas of life.   Want to learn more?  Visit my For Lawyers page.

Come Back to the Blog!

This blog will cover topics such as relationships, mindfulness, trauma, stress reduction, time management, dealing with difficult people, and working with emotions.  While it is not therapy, and should not be substituted for treatment by a mental health provider, I hope you will find it useful and welcome your feedback.
